  1. The FRED Spreadsheet Add-In is the next step toward improving the usability of economic data for students, researchers, and businesspeople alike. The FRED Add-In has been designed with a simple interface that provides users with a fast way to get economic data from FRED into Excel for conducting analysis using all of the tools Excel has to offer.

Excel Add-Ins (2007, 2010, 2013, 2016) Add-ins are different extensions of excel which when enabled they activate when the excel is started and a user can use its functions, excel has various different add-ins and they are in the options section of the file tab, the first box shows the enabled add-ins in the system and if the user wants to enable more add-ins we need to click on manage add-ins.

Within the spreadsheet, you can browse each data repository by category or search by keywords to find data IDs and to download the series information and data. Once the desired data series are downloaded, all of Excel’s rich functionality is available to create analyses and graph results.

Throughout the EIA website, the symbol is used to denote a link to a page with the series ID or source key and sample API calls. The series ID can be copied and pasted directly into Excel and the series data fetched with the EIA add-in. This is another way to load data series found on www.eia.gov into your workbook.

Currently, EIA's data API contains 1.6 million energy series. The St. Louis Federal Reserve's API contains 240,000 economic series. Both organizations offer the data APIs, bulk data downloads, and Excel add-ins free of charge as part of their commitment to open data.

The add-in contains four groups of buttons:

  1. Download Tools: Get Data is the only means of fetching and updating data series, and update both EIA and FRED series throughout the entire workbook
  2. EIA Data: Browse or search for EIA series IDs. Requires a subsequent 'Get Data' operation to download the full series and observations.
  3. FRED Data: Browse or search for FRED series IDs. Requires a subsequent 'Get Data' operation to download the full series and observations. Note that data manipulations currently are only available for FRED data series.
  4. Data tools: Tools to change the frequency of series, if possible (requires a subsequent 'Get Data' operation), and a quick graphing tool.
  5. Support: link to instructions and to EIA and to FRED

Downloading EIA or FRED data into Excel is very simple: The key is understanding where (which rows) in the Excel worksheet to input a series ID. The only information necessary to Get Data is the series ID in the row 1.

Clicking the 'Get Data' button fetches the series title, units, frequency, and the data points in reverse chronological order. Reverse chronological order has several advantages:

  • the most recent data will always be aligned at the top, allowing easy comparison of most recent data for series with differnet starting dates
  • graphs of partial data ranges will be preserved on subsequent get data operations, correctly updating 'last X periods' type of graphs

Temporary installation

Opening the add-in file (eia.xlam) will activate the macro for as long as the Excel workbook is open on your computer. In this mode, you will need to open eia.xlam again after rebooting or closing all workbooks to use the EIA & Fred Data add-in.

Permanent installation

To have the add-in permanently available whenever you open Excel, please follow the instructions below:

EIA Add-In Installation Instructions (Excel 2013)

  1. Click here to download/save the EIA Excel Data Add-In to your computer. You should not move this file after you install the Add-In so pick a permanent location.
  2. Open Microsoft Excel and click on the File menu button in the upper left-hand corner of the window.
  3. Choose Options from the menu.
  4. On the left side of the window choose Add-Ins.
  5. On the bottom of the window choose Go.
  6. In the new window, choose and locate the fileeia.xlam that you downloaded and click OK.
  7. Make sure the check box next to EIA is checked: . Click OK.
  8. You may be prompted with a security warning asking if you want to allow Macro's and data connections from the Add-In. Click OK.
  9. Close and re-open Excel to verify that the Add-In has been installed correctly, the 'EIA & FRED Data' tab should be visible (shown below).

Q: Do I need an Internet connection to use the EIA/FRED Add-in?
A: Yes, while some functionality exists without an internet connection you will need to be connected to the Internet to utilize the full capabilities of the Add-in.

Q: Is this the download for the FRED Excel Add-in?
A: No, this is the download for the EIA/FRED Excel Add-in which allows you to access and run analyses with both FRED and EIA data.

Q: Do you have an option for data to come in a row rather than a column?
A: We do. This was a requested feature we added in Version 4.

Q: If I update the data will it destroy any computations I've made in the workbook?
A: Download the new data via the add-in tool, sort on the dates and save- then set the links to refer to the unchanged cells in the newly sorted sheet.

Q: Why is there an annoying security dialog every time I open the EIA/FRED Excel Add-in?
A: To get rid of the security dialog you need to add the EIA/FRED Excel add-in to the list of trusted Add-ins. To do this, click the 'File' tab in the top left corner of the Excel window and select 'options'. In the new window click 'Add-ins' and then the 'Go...' button. Browse the list of available Add-ins and make sure the box next to the one labeled EIA is checked. Close Excel. When you next open Excel the security dialog will no longer be present.

These are Excel add-in files (.xla) for the OM/IE collection. They are compressed and stored at this site with the (.zip) suffix. Download by clicking on the file name of the add-in in the left most column. The files may be expanded with the free Aladdin Expander.

As the add-ins are improved and corrected, we update the versions on the web. The DateModified entries below show the dates of the latest revisions. Click the Revisions link on the left to see the purpose of each revision. If you replace an add-in with a newer version, be sure to delete or change the name of the old version. Otherwise, Excel may link to the old version rather than the new.

Links are provided to the instructions for each add-in. Click on the add-in name or the leaf on the right to reach the instructions. Add-ins are not used like regular Excel workbook files. They must be installed through the add-in dialog on the tools menu or through the Add OMIE. Review the General Instructions for loading add-ins.

Add OMIE
When called, this add-in lists all the OM/IE add-ins that are in the same directory as the Add OMIE add-in. Add-ins are installed and removed with a simple click of a button. The add-in also loads demonstration files that illustrate the add-ins. To use this feature these files must be stored in a the same directory as the add-ins. See the instructions for details.

Investment Economics
This add-in performs a variety of procedures to evaluate investment alternatives. Included are procedures to define projects and compute measures of effectiveness such as present worth, annual worth and internal rate of return. Functions are provided to compute the traditional time value of money factors. Projects may be defined with tax and inflation considerations. Portfolio
This add-in uses optimization for two kinds of portfolio problems. Capital Budgeting selects a portfolio from a set of candidate projects. A project is described by its initial investment, annual return, salvage value and life. The first three of these factors are described by averages and standard deviations. Markowitz Portfolio analysis determines an optimum mix if financial securities considering both security returns and risk. Risk is measured by the statistical variance of the portfolio. The analysis uses historical return data to determine the expected return for each security and the covariance matrix showing the dependence between securities.

Process Flow Analysis
The Process Flow Add-in provides a tool to analyze and design manufacturing systems. Four principal activities are supported: process definition, economic analysis, resource requirements analysis and product mix decisions. Either tree or network structures are allowed. The add-in links with the Math. Programming add-in to produce linear and mixed integer models for decisions. It also links with the Facility Layout add-in for facility design. Models for queues, inventories and lot change delays are included.

Facility Layout
This add-in accepts as data: a list of departments, physical size of departments, part flows between departments and the size of a proposed plant. The program uses the CRAFT procedure in an attempt to find the layout of departments that minimizes the distance over which parts must flow.

The new version interacts with the Process Flow add-in. Significant revision was made on 2/13/03. Optimization was added on 1/22/04.

Forecasting
The add-in implements several forecasting methods for data series including: moving average, exponential smoothing, regression and double exponential smoothing. The add-in constructs a form that holds the data and uses functions to compute forecasts and forecast errors. Several data series can be analyzed on a single worksheet page. An option allows comparison of several methods for a single time series. A simulation option creates data simulated with the Monte Carlo technique. A portfolio option evaluates and forecasts a portfolio of investments. Adjustments are provided for series with seasonality.

Inventory
We compute the Economic Lot Size with or without backorders or lost sales. We also allow either finite or infinite replenishment rates. Both deterministic and stochastic models are considered. The add-in finds the optimum lot size with cost breaks. Three optimization models that involve more than one item are solved: multi-item systems, inventories with common cycle times and machine scheduling. The add-in includes several models of manufacturing processes that produce Work-in-Process. Total WIP and cycle times are computed for combinations of inventories arranged into systems.

Materials Requirement Planning
Materials Requirement Planning (MRP) is a scheduling procedure for production processes that have several levels of production. The add-in provides the means to enter data concerning a production system and determine a schedule with MRP.

Project Management
This add-in performs the computations of CPM and PERT. Given the activities of the project, the add-in computes the critical path. A graphical display is available. With restricted resources, the add-in generates schedules which attempt to minimize shortage costs.
